SIENESE PUBLIC BATHS

A combination of digital and physical experimentation with gyroidial space-making techniques became synthesised in a spatial language of ‘blends and voids’. Siena is a city divided into distinct regions, each with individual identities and traditions. Often lying between contrade, these boundaries would have crossed at the bathhouse. Interested in the typical interiority of these bathhouses, the project created conditions simultaneously inside and outside, public and private, introspective and extrospective.
Year 2 Final Project
Unit C: Barry Wark, Andreas Körner, Pravin Ghosh Site Location: Piazza de Mercato, Siena, Tuscany
Date: January - May 2018

Introspection - Extrospection
A language of blends and voids control degrees of interiority.

Blending Public and Private
Folding layer-spaces allow for public and private areas to remain distinct, yet closely related with each other.

Sectional Model
Landscaping penetrates into the bathouse interior. The sectional model described a narrative
of moving from interior (mental) concerns, to that of the exterior - using varying water temperatures.
